I have another issue coming up and I'm praying, I'm assigned another capable individual (if not Ms Navatta), that would be just as professional in getting the job done.
Thank you: NNJLS
I was harassed, threatened, and illegally and wrongfully evicted from my previous illegal apartment and forced to move in with my boyfriend after only a couple of months together because I literally had no other option besides being homeless. We each pay our half of the rent and utilities and that is it. Our finances are not intertwined in any way shape or form.
In fact, I didn't even know what his income was until this whole debacle. But during my application process phone call, I was told I was REQUIRED to find out this information that does not apply to me whatsoever and to call her back when I did. I was then forced to have a financial conversation about our specific individual incomes for no reason and called back in the timeframe she had given me. No answer - so I left a message that I had gotten the information she wanted and could call me back to finish the application processes when she was available again.
I did not get called back. I had to call the woman yet again on my own accord in order to try to pick up and continue the application process. When I called she immediately picked up, which means she was not on the phone with anyone at the time and could have just as easily called me back instead of completely ignoring my message.
When she finally input the income information for him I was denied help because "even though you qualify for legal services, adding your boyfriend puts you over the qualifying limit." I continuously asked why he was added, and why does the fact that he has a job mattered in any way since this whole case and my financial situation that would qualify me for low-income services did not involve him in even the slightest. I was told "it just is."
So regardless of the fact that I was told my financial situation qualifies me for legal help...because of the SOLE FACT that there was another person living under the same roof as me despite not even knowing each others income or financial situations, paying only half of the rent and utilities each, was denied help.
So my financial situation is still the same low that qualified me for help, but was essentially told that if I wanted legal help then I would need to get him to fund me, which he can't even do because he barely makes more than I do.
So thanks for absolutely nothing Paterson Legal Services. Thanks for telling me that I am indeed poor and acknowledging and admitting the fact that I don't have any other options to hire and pay for a lawyer on my own - which is the sole purpose of the organization, then going "oh well, it is what it is" and hanging up.
