A year and a half ago, my life almost ended...I was arrested by a police officer for a crime I did not commit. I was later told by a judge that there was sufficient evidence to warrant this arrest but it took many months to hear this information. In the meantime, since the arrest, I lost many things; my job, my license, friends, partners, faith in the overall kindness of human beings. Kindness is an important part of how I was raised and who I am. It was kindness that put me on the road that night. It was kindness that led me to create a career where I helped people, the very career that became threatened that fateful night. The very next person who showed me kindness after that traumatic event was Joseph Bernard. There was no way for him to show me that absolutely everything will be ok. He couldn't give me a satisfactory answer no matter how many questions I had (and I ALWAYS had many!!). For facts, he told me straight up it would be unethical if he told me that he could guarantee that everything will be ok. But he did tell me if he lost me case, he would most likely retire. That's the kind of backing you get with Mr. Bernard. That's the kind of restoration of faith and life you get with him. That's the kind of reintroduction to the kindness of humans you get when you hire this man. I never give a five star review because no one is perfect. That being said, it was close. From day one even before he was paid Joe and his team were there to help by giving very clear and sound advice. My case was ( by no fault of Joe) drawn out for 11+ months. Joe remained available, professional and approachable the entire time. In my case he showed an outstanding ability to quickly recognize and take advantage of opportunity in the court room. We made an appearance to present a motion to the court and set a trial date. What happened was we walked out with multiple charges dismissed including the O.U.I., done with court and no more money out of my pocket to the state or anyone else.. I believe that a combination of Joe's experience, professionalism, knowledge, reputation and repore is what lead to a great outcome. I retained Attorney Bernard for an OUI charge, which I received, and needed an experienced lawyer for my situation. At first, he was easy to get in touch with, very communicative and had an inviting personality. In short order, these qualities quickly dissipated and you felt more like a number, not an individual. Navigating along this process, you need someone who can help you through the process, from start to finish and was left hanging on many occasions. It took many instances to get in touch with him and to have follow through on certain aspects of the process, further there was a feeling that you were forgotten along the way. This was a process in which there were many stones that were felt to be unturned or untouched and further, that there wasn't a sense of wanting to go down another avenue. Essentially, it was felt a better outcome could've been received in the end, based on a the particular circumstances of the case. I do not think that Attorney Bernard stands out from any other Western MA lawyer and he didn't appear to do anything special, above and beyond, for my case, to make me feel that way. The cons of my experience with him definitely outweigh the pros, as much as I would like to rate him higher, I simply cannot.
