My brother suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. I walked in for legal assistance the first time for SSI help and they told me to get denied 3 times and then they would help my brother. I got handed a brochure. Then I walked into the office a 2nd time to ask for legal assistance because my brother has been in the hospital every single year for 3 to 4 weeks at a time. I asked for some direction or assistance to get guardianship or some medical power of attorney. The secretary when short curly hair said sorry we can't help you here's a brochure again. I replied I don't think you guys care about Young American males. The Discrimination that happens to men is absolutely disgusting. I'm sure if you were female and pregnant he would get money and assistance. I said ma'am you do not care. The front desk said yes we do care ....she goes but my boss needs me and I have to walk away now and close the glass door on my face. I literally received 30 seconds of her time. I was literally crying in front of her. Clearly she does not know what it's like to have her family member in the hospital with paranoid schizophrenia. No one has ever reached out to us. Prairie State Legal I believe is only for women and children. There is no legal assistance for anybody in McHenry County that suffers with a mental disability. With no help I literally went in front of a judge myself. They turned me away and ripped me a new one. Are we wanted to do was help our loved one and so far my brother has been threatened to be arrested if he doesn't show up to court and I was threatened to get sued for fees even though they were waived. So we've pretty much given up. I find it hard to believe the only way you can get assistance as if your family spends thousands of dollars. Clearly the mentally ill does not have access to unlimited funds. And we wonder why there are shootings and people wandering the streets homeless. Or even these opioid epidemics. I highly do not recommend coming here unless you want to feel like the bottom of somebody shoe. Definitely there is some discrimination and racial profiling going on here, beware!
