It was a little daunting at first, considering that I've never had any first hand experience with an attorney. I had done a bit of research online for several months so I could do my best to understand the process of a step-parent adoption, as well as the applicable laws surrounding it.
During my own research, I found numerous others who shared their own experiences, many of which highly recommended having help from an attorney to ensure everything is done correctly the first time. As such, I began looking up local attorneys here in Eugene.
The first two I contacted refused to answer a single question until they were paid. I'm not saying that they shouldn't, as I do understand the need to be able to keep the lights on at the end of the day. But, I'm usually very cautious when I need to spend money, and don't want to spend it only to be told "no", and ultimately not being able to do what I set out to do in the first place.
Then I came across Peggy's website. It was a single page with a little bit of information about her practice on it, and a couple of ways in which she could be contacted. So my wife and I asked her the very same question. This is what made us decide that she was the perfect fit to help us. She answered our question without first asking to be paid, which told me that she wasn't all about money. This was only further exemplified during the months on which she was helping us.
Peggy seems to legitimately care about the people she helps. She kept us in the loop throughout the process and was quick to answer when we had questions, or were just wanting to check in to see how things were going. She always seemed quite happy, and was superbly pleasant during our interactions, both face-to-face and otherwise. In fact, during our initially meeting, I was quite blown away. There was no big office building filled to the brim with employees everywhere, like I was originally expecting for some reason (blame Hollywood?). Instead, her office is located inside of a building shared with someone else, and this building looks like it was a re-purposed house. Because of this, I felt less like I had to impress, which is good because meeting new people makes me really nervous to begin with.
Overall, the experience we had with Peggy was beyond what I had expected. With her help, the process was pretty quick and painless, and I never once felt like we were being taken advantage of. If you're looking for an attorney for your own adoption, or other family related legal needs, I definitely recommend contacting Peggy. If her voicemail box is full, don't let that discourage you. This happened when I first tried to call her, and I wound up emailing her as a result. We received a reply to our email pretty quick in the form of a phone call (same day I believe).
I did research on several different local attorneys and even met with a few of them. However, when I met with Peggy, the difference was obvious right from the moment I sat down to talk with her. This woman cared. She genuinely cared. She was concerned for me, and she was concerned for my children. She truly wanted what was in their best interest. As I look back and reflect on the whole process, I am so grateful that she helped me to keep a healthy perspective on the situation. She guided and encouraged me throughout the entire process and did business with extraordinary ethics. I would recommend her to my dearest loved ones.
